Self-Assessment of Social Communication Skills: Insights into Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Listening Aspects

Abstract

Music engagement is critical in enhancing social communication skills, making it a valuable tool for holistic educational development. This study explores the impact of rhythm, melody, and harmony on verbal, non-verbal, and listening skills among 227 Cangzhou Vocational and Technical College students. A descriptive-correlational research design was used, with data collected through self-assessment questionnaires and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and Jamovi software. The results show that rhythm-based activities improve timing and coordination, enabling students to synchronize with peers and enhance group work. Melodic engagement boosts verbal expression and emotional articulation, combining auditory stimulation with linguistic creativity. Harmonic activities promote active listening and adaptability as students learn to collaborate effectively in group settings. Demographic factors, such as gender and academic performance, also influenced engagement levels, with female students showing higher verbal communication engagement. Based on these findings, music-based interventions can be tailored to address individual learning needs, especially in environments requiring teamwork and interaction. Educators can use rhythmic group tasks to improve coordination, melodic exercises for verbal fluency, and harmonic work to foster cooperative problem-solving. The study concludes that integrating music-centered strategies in vocational training can equip students with the communication skills needed for professional success.

    Dr. Maria Cecilia C. Ycong has her two recent research publications which are indexed in Google Scholar entitled “Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education Lessons Learned and Ways for Moving Forward” which she presented in Tokyo, Japan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the University of the Philippines-Los Banos; and “ A Survey in Identifying Key Environmental Problems in Valenzuela City” with co-authors from known universities of the country under the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) NICER Program. She was recognized as a senior reviewer of the International Academic Forum (IAFOR). She reviews  international and local journals in the country. 

    Dr. Ycong is a holder of Master of Arts in Communication from the University of the Philippines and Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management from New Era University. She is a faculty at Media and Communication (MaC) and the Graduate School of Education (GSE).
