Abstract

Vibrio species are particularly pathogenic and pose significant public health risks through contaminated shellfish and marine environments. This study assessed the occurrence, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular identification of Vibrio species isolated from mud clams, mud crabs, and white leg shrimp sold in three public markets in Bukidnon, Philippines. A high occurrence (55%) of these bacteria was observed across all locations. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of fifteen isolates revealed 100% resistance to ampicillin and 60% to cefotaxime, with 66% exhibiting multidrug resistance. 16S rRNA sequencing identified the isolates with the closest similarity to Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio furnissii, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio sp.. These findings point to a widespread presence of multidrug-resistant Vibrio spp., suggesting potential food safety risks and underscoring the need for ongoing monitoring and management to mitigate Vibrio-related health threats in the region.
